COURSE DETAILS: This class will be focused on learning about animals! What could be more fun! We will start our year together with learning about a scientific classification called “taxonomy,” and the organization and naming of animal species. It will then be divided into 5 units spread over the remainder of the year – 1 for each of the vertebrate animal classes we will be studying: birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. During each unit we will study the unique characteristics of that class, specific animals that are a part of it, and will include some hands-on projects/activities (owl pellet dissections, fish “painting,” etc.). To end each of these units, students will get to pick one animal from that class of animals and do their own independent study of it. This will require some work time at home, as well as bringing in research resources on their chosen animal for in-class work time (presentation materials for these projects will be provided). These will then be presented to the class.
