Intro to Creative Writing

Teacher: Naomi Stahnke
Ages: 9-12
Class size: 4-12
Materials fee: $30 (Includes consumable workbook, “The Creative Writer, Level 1” by
Boris Fishman, and copies of handouts and activities)
Tuition: $35

Supplies Needed: Three-Ring binder, loose-leaf notebook paper (no spiral-bound,
please), pencils, colored pencils

For home use: Access to a computer with word-processing software and printer

COURSE DETAILS: Intro to Creative Writing is a fun, imaginative introduction for writers
of all skill levels! Following the book, “The Creative Writer”, each class will spend time
breaking down the elements of successful pieces of both fiction and poetry, and then
students will practice using those elements in their own stories, poems, and essays.
Students will become more aware of language, more confident in their creativity, and
more proficient with varying vocabulary and sentence structure. The class will also
cover story structure, point of view, characterization, plotting, various types of poetry,
and other vital skills.

NOTE: If your student has had little to no past writing experience—or is not quite ready
for multiple-paragraph writing—I suggest waiting a year or two to take the class,
especially if they have weak punctuation or grammar skills and still need a lot of help
planning, organizing, and adding details to a story.

HOMEWORK: 1-2 hours per week writing, editing, or doing pre-writing activities.
Younger students may require help from parents.
